Interdepartmental Center For City Science

CISC

The Interdepartmental Center for City Science, established within the CNR, aims to serve as a reference point for science and research, with the goal of supporting city management. Through the development of Urban Intelligence, the advancement of scientific knowledge, and the technological transfer of results, the Center seeks to promote urban innovation and sustainability.

The Interdepartmental Center for City Science was officially launched in Rome on July 2, 2024

During an event organized by the Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport (CNR-DIITET), the Interdepartmental Center for City Science was officially inaugurated. This multidisciplinary network, composed of CNR Departments and Institutes, aims to support urban governance through the use of urban intelligence. The main objective of the Center—open to collaboration with other research institutions, universities, public administrations, and businesses—is the development of Digital Twins: virtual representations of cities that will enable better analysis and understanding of urban dynamics through technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and simulation. The CISC will coordinate pilot projects dedicated to urban intelligence in various areas of the country, with headquarters in Rome and across regional units that adopt the project.

Urban

Urban Intelligence aims to place the complexity of cities back at the center of urban governance by promoting the study of cities as a “system of systems.” It focuses on analyzing the interconnections between systems and subsystems using a multi-level approach. The digital system pairs the city’s main physical subsystems with corresponding thematic digital twins.

Intelligence

Decision support summarizes the purpose of thematic digital twins. Understanding how the various subsystems function, replicating them, and integrating them is driven by the need to monitor the overall system and intervene to prevent undesirable behaviors or to guide it in a desired direction.

Science

City science is a complex process that integrates and involves multiple interacting disciplines and areas of expertise. A robust multi-objective, multidisciplinary optimization architecture for querying the digital twin and supporting decision-making will enable the identification of optimal solutions for city management.

Hub

The UISH project provides a hub for cities that wish to join this network and experiment with the Urban Intelligence (UI) model. Following an expression of interest from participating cities, the CNR will offer technical and scientific support to develop a potential roadmap of activities needed for the development of Urban Digital Twins, tailored to the available assets (technological, digital, etc.) and the specific goals of each city.
