The “Digital Twin of the City of Matera” project is part of the CNR’s strategic Urban Intelligence program, aiming to integrate digital technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, and predictive modeling to understand and support urban transformation. The dedicated laboratory serves as a “living lab” for testing services that make data and software modules connected to the digital twin accessible, offering interfaces for citizens, stakeholders, and businesses. The platform’s technical components include sensors, data lakes, simulation modules, and user interfaces, all designed to virtually represent and evolve the area’s socio-physical system. The project addresses strategic challenges such as urban mobility, energy efficiency of the building stock, resilience to extreme weather events, the circular economy, and cultural valorization. Thanks to this data-driven approach, Matera is preparing to experiment with new sustainable and replicable urban services, with a strong focus on innovation, participation, and informed governance.
