The mission significantly contributed to promoting the activities of the CISC, the Interdepartmental Center for City Science, fostering new opportunities for international collaboration and strengthening the scientific positioning of the CNR in the context of urban innovation. It was also an occasion to consolidate an important international scientific network to support the development of initiatives related to Urban Intelligence and the Urban Digital Twin.
The delegation representing the CNR during the mission was composed of:

– Giordana Castelli, Coordinator of CISC and Senior Technologist at DIITET

– Giovanni Felici, Director of the Institute of System Analysis and Computer Science of the CNR (IASI)

– Massimo Mari, Technologist at DIITET.

TOKYO, May 12, 2025 – During the mission, the delegation participated in several key meetings, including:
● An institutional meeting with Kazunari Kudo, Director of Future Business Design at the Smart City Institute Japan, held in the Conference Room of the Nikkei Tokyo Head Office.

● A meeting with Takeo Hamada, Project Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo, held at the DAIW

During the event, it was highlighted how the application of urban geosciences is a fundamental tool for correct urban planning and risk mitigation policies in cities. The CNR’s presentation showed how the analysis of the subsoil, through geology, geophysics, and three-dimensional modeling techniques, is essential for identifying the most vulnerable areas in cities like Rome. Seismic phenomenon simulations and subsoil maps enable predicting earthquake effects and planning mitigation actions, contributing to the protection of historic monuments and the safety of citizens. The research, integrated with remote sensing technologies and complex databases, allows obtaining predictive models useful for more effective urban management. The multidisciplinary approach adopted aims to make cities more secure and resilient, equipped with advanced scientific tools that support autonomous decisions with significant impacts on urban life quality. In conclusion, urban geosciences are essential instruments for preventing natural risks and planning sustainable urban development, with a strong interdisciplinary and integrated approach.
